What to Expect from Your Dental Implant Procedure

Last updated 6 years ago

No one wants a smile with gaps and missing teeth, but many dental patients also don’t want to deal with the hassle of dentures. Dental implants offer the perfect solution for many patients in need of tooth restoration. Implants look, act, and feel like real teeth, allowing you to enjoy your favorite foods and the convenience of normal tooth brushing.

1. Creating a Plan for Your New Smile: During a consultation at your cosmetic dentistry office, your dentist will determine if you’re eligible for dental implants by evaluating your oral and overall health. An ideal patient must have a strong immune system and sufficient jawbone density in order to undergo the procedure. If you’re eligible, the dentist will begin by taking an impression of your teeth and mouth. This information is sent to a dental implant specialist who creates a replacement crown that will permanently attach to the implant and perfectly match your smile.

2. Placing the Anchor: Next, an anchor is placed through the gums and attaches to the jawbone. Multiple anchors are used if more than one tooth is being replaced. These small titanium posts are placed into the site where the missing tooth was previously located.

3. Healing: After the anchors are placed, the site is given time to heal. This usually takes between one and three months. During the healing process, the jawbone and gum tissue grow around and integrate with the anchor, making the titanium post stable and permanent.

4. Placing the Implant’s Crown: After you’ve properly healed, you will head back to your cosmetic dentist to have the crown placed over the anchor. This crown must be cared for just like your normal teeth, with regular brushing and flossing. With good care, implants last for many years or even an entire lifetime.
