Why Do Dentists X-Ray Your Teeth?

Last updated 5 years ago

X-rays, or radiographs, can detect many dental problems that cannot be seen with the naked eye. As this video from the American Dental Association explains, a general or cosmetic dentist will utilize X-rays during an examination to ensure that his patient’s teeth are healthy and free from oral disease.

During the X-ray procedure, a small part of the patient’s body is exposed to radiation. Children and pregnant women are required to wear a leaded apron with a thyroid collar to further decrease radiation exposure. The dentist determines the number of X-rays to be taken by evaluating the patient’s past oral health. By implementing the use of X-rays, dentists can find small cavities between teeth or behind fillings. They can spot bone infections or periodontal disease. No matter the oral issue, early detection is the key to its treatment.

Dr. Kenn Kakosian, D.D.S., P.C. provides patients in the greater New York City area with a wide range of general and cosmetic dentistry treatment options, including Invisalign and veneers. To schedule an appointment, call (212) 661-0949.
