What Is the Difference Between Veneers and Lumineers?

Last updated 6 years ago

For individuals who suffer from chipped, gapped, or stained teeth, smiling can be a source of stress and embarrassment. Fortunately, cosmetic dentistry specialists have many treatment options that can correct these issues. Veneers and Lumineers function in similar ways to effectively eliminate the aesthetic concerns that result from chipped, misaligned, or discolored teeth.

Cosmetic dentists have been using veneers for decades. These thin porcelain shells cover the tooth to hide underlying cosmetic issues. While veneers can produce a significantly improved smile, patients must undergo a number of irreversible procedures to receive them. Patients may have to make several appointments to have multiple impressions taken of their teeth. Veneers are also permanent. To apply these devices, a dentist must shave down the enamel along the tooth’s surface. If a patient decides to undergo veneer treatment, he or she must keep up with replacement veneers for the rest of his or her life. Moreover, when the tooth is shaved down, the patient may experience heightened sensitivity, which may not lessen as time goes by.

Lumineers are the preferred cosmetic treatment option because of their convenience and aesthetic appeal. Beautiful and completely natural looking, Lumineers are nearly indistinguishable from the patient’s own teeth. Moreover, the Lumineer process takes only two short visits to the dental office. The first appointment involves taking an impression of the patient’s mouth. The second appointment entails the application of the Lumineers, which do not require any alteration to the tooth surface. Moreover, Lumineers are completely reversible. If a patient decides he or she no longer wishes to have Lumineers in the future, this type of veneer can be removed without any damage incurred to the natural teeth.
