How Does Invisalign Work?

Last updated 5 years ago

Misaligned teeth are not only a cosmetic issue, but affect your overall dental health as well. The Invisalign orthodontic system is an alternative to traditional braces that improves the alignment of your teeth. Invisalign is ideal for treating many types of malocclusion during the comfortable and fast treatment process.

Aligner Trays
Unlike metal braces that use brackets bonded to your teeth to hold wires that guide tooth movement, the Invisalign system uses a series of clear plastic aligner trays. These trays act like the wires on a traditional set of braces, exerting pressure on the teeth to move them into ideal alignment. Over the course of your treatment, you will use a new tray every two weeks as your teeth move closer to their final locations. Invisalign trays snap into place over your teeth and are virtually invisible when worn. The trays do not affect your speech and can be removed during meals and to brush and floss normally during your orthodontic treatment. Your aligners can be worn while you are working, exercising, and enjoying any other activity.

Advanced Software
Your cosmetic dentist customizes your Invisalign treatment using advanced computer software. He will first take images of your teeth, which are input into the program to design your individual treatment plan. The Invisalign software determines the number of trays needed to correct your tooth alignment and provides you with an estimate of your total treatment time. Typically, Invisalign treatment lasts for approximately a year and utilizes 18 to 30 separate trays. Once you are ready to begin treatment, your cosmetic dentist will send your information to Invisalign and your trays will be fabricated and sent to your dentist within a few weeks.
